Falcons Finish Fifth at MPSF Team Finals

STANFORD, Calif. - The Air Force men's gymnastics team finished fifth at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships on Friday, March 19, in Stanford, Calif., posting a team score of 204.900.
California posted a team total of 220.225 to dethrone five-time defending champion Oklahoma, whose record of 52 straight wins came to a halt with a second-place score of 219.600. Stanford finished third with a combined score of 214.675, while Nebraska posted a fourth-place score of 211.525.
Air Force had two gymnasts qualify for the individual event finals that will take place tomorrow (March 20), as one of the top eight finishers from the team competition.
Senior co-captain Jeff Andersen (Marietta, Ga.) qualified on the parallel bars after tying for sixth place with a score of 8.650. He also advanced on the pommel horse after placing seventh with a score of 8.900
Sophomore Greg Stine (Houston, Texas) advanced to the finals on the still rings after tying for sixth with a mark of 9.375. Andersen narrowly missed the cut, placing ninth with a score of 9.275. Stine advanced on the vault, as well, with a score of 9.000.
In addition to the Falcons' top-eight finishes, Stine led the team on the floor and high bar. The sophomore garnered a 10th-place score of 9.050 on the floor and tallied an 8.675 on the high bar to finish 18th. He also notched a top-10 finish on the parallel bars with a 8.550.
The all-around competition was also contested tonight and Stine registered a combined score of 52.800 to finished fifth. Andersen was the only other Falcon to compete in the all-around and finished seventh with a score of 52.425.
Andersen and Stine will compete tomorrow night in the event finals of the 2004 MPSF Championships in Stanford, Calif.
