INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Three members of the Air Force women's gymnastics team have been selected to compete at the NCAA Central Regional Championships, the NCAA selection committee announced today (March 22).
Junior Jessa Liegl (Lincoln, Neb.), senior Rebecca Lewis (Plano, Texas) and sophomore Lauren Robison (Garner, N.C.) will compete in the all-around at the regional competition in Denver, Colo., on Saturday, April 3.
Senior Erin Maguire (Pocatello, Idaho) is an alternate for the all-around, as well as an alternate to serve as an event specialist on the balance beam and floor exercise.
Liegl is currently ranked No. 18 in the North Central Region with a Regional Qualifying Score of 39.090. It is the eighth-best score of the all-around competitors that will be in Denver and the second-highest score by a gymnast not attached to a competing team.
Robison has the fourth-best all-around score by an unattached competitor with a RQS of 38.470 and Lewis recorded the fifth-highest score (RQS: 38.420). Joining the Falcon trio will be Alex Martin and Gretchen Goerlitz of Utah State - ranked first and third, respectively, in the unattached all-around competition.
Maguire has a Regional Qualifying Score of 38.055 in the all-around, while posting a RQS of 9.830 on the balance beam and a 9.880 on the floor exercise. She is the only non-Utah State gymnast that has a possibility to compete as an individual event specialist, as each of the competitors and the remaining two alternates are all Aggies.
The Falcons will join the competing teams of Stanford, Washington, Denver, Iowa, Minnesota and Southern Utah, as well as individual competitors from Utah State, for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will earn a berth to the 2004 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, which will be held April 15-17, in Los Angeles, Calif.
