CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Senior Air Force gymnast Jeff Andersen (Marietta, Ga.) advanced to the all-around finals of the 2004 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships following a fourth-place overall finish at the national qualifiers this afternoon (April 2) in Champaign, Ill. Sophomore Greg Stine (Houston, Texas) finished ninth in the preliminaries, but did not advance to the finals.
The top three-teams from each qualifying session advance to the finals, as well as the top-three all-around competitors that are not on an advancing team.
Andersen recorded a total score of 52.125, which was the fourth-best score of the 12 gymnasts that competed on every event and was the second-best score of individual all-around competitors. His combined score was highlighted by a pair of top-ten finishes. Of the 42 competitors on each event, the Nissen-Emery Award finalist finished ninth on the pommel horse (9.000) and tied for 10th on the still rings (9.250). He also posted an 8.975 on the vault, an 8.500 on the floor, an 8.400 on the parallel bars and an 8.000 on the high bar.
It is the second consecutive year that Andersen has advanced to the NCAA finals, as he competed in the floor exercise finals.
Stine recorded a combined score of 50.200 to finish ninth overall and sixth of the gymnasts who were not on an advancing team. The sophomore garnered two top-20 finishes, as he tied for 19th on the parallel bars (8.500) and tied for 20th on the still rings (8.850). He also registered marks of 8.600 on the vault, 8.350 on the pommel horse, 8.250 on the floor and 7.650 on the high bar.
Penn State's Luis Vargas won the all-around, with a score of 53.900, while Michigan's Gerry Signorelli placed second. Iowa's Linas Gaveika and Michael Reavis finished third and fifth, respectively, around Andersen and his fourth-place finish.
Since Penn State and Michigan are advancing as a team to the finals with Oklahoma, Andersen will advance to the all-around finals with Gaveika and Reavis. The remainder of the field will be determined following the second session which begins tonight at 7 p.m.
The all-around finals will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday (April 3) at Assembly Hall on the campus of the University of Illinois. Qualifying for the individual event finals, which are slated for Sunday (April 4), will also be contested tomorrow night, along with the team finals.
