Falcons Finish Sixth At USAG Championships

DENTON, Texas - The Air Force women's gymnastics team concluded the 2004 season on Thursday, April 8, at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championship preliminaries in Denton, Texas. The Falcons posted a 191.175 to finish sixth in the eight team field.
Centenary won the preliminary with a total score of 193.275. They will advance to the team finals with Texas Woman's University (192.275), UC-Davis (191.850) and Temple (191.375). Cornell finished fifth with a team score of 191.325, while Seattle Pacific (190.975) and Southern Connecticut (188.375) rounded out the competition.
Air Force won the vault with a team score of 48.325.
The all-around competition was also contested on Thursday afternoon and junior Jessa Liegl (Lincoln, Neb.) finished second with a score of 38.950 - just .025 off of the event winner. Sophomore Lauren Robison (Garner, N.C.) placed fourth with a score of 38.450, while senior Erin Maguire tied for fifth with a mark of 38.325.
Liegl and Maguire will join seniors Laura Frank (Midland, Pa.) and Rebecca Lewis (Plano, Texas) on Saturday, April 10, for the individual event finals - as all four finished within the top eight on at least one event.
Maguire paced the Falcons, winning the floor exercise with a career-best matching mark of 9.925. She also tied for second on the vault with a score of 9.825. Liegl also advanced in a pair of events, as she tied for second on the floor exercise with a 9.900 and tied for eighth on the balance beam with a score of 9.750.
On the vault, Maguire will be joined by Frank and Lewis, who finished tied for fifth and seventh, respectively. Frank registered a 9.700 on the vault, while Lewis was one of four gymnasts to post a 9.650.
The individual event finals begin at 7 p.m., on Saturday, April 10, at Pioneer Hall on the campus of Texas Woman's University. The top eight finishers from Saturday's finals will be awarded USAG All-America honors on their respective events.
