USAFA, Colo. -
Air Force men's basketball player Nick Welch underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a broken bone in his left foot. He broke his foot on July 1st while playing pickup basketball at home in Fort Worth, Texas. Welch, a second-team all-Mountain West Conference selection last season, is expected to make a full recovery and be available for the team's first official practice on Saturday, Oct. 15, according to team medical personnel.
Preseason surgery is nothing new to Welch, who injured his left knee in August of 2003 and a subsequent surgery caused him to miss the first game of the 2003-04 campaign. He then reinjured the knee during an individual workout in August of 2004 and underwent arthroscopic surgery.
Welch, who started all 30 games last season as a junior, finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. He finished in the top 10 in the MWC in steals (7th), assists (8th) and 3PT% (8th) and helped the Falcons to their second-best record (18-12) in school history.
