Hiroki Akiyama scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute and Ismael Ibarra added an insurance goal with less than a minute remaining Friday night to give the San Jose State men's soccer team a 3-1 victory over Air Force at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, San Jose State improved to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the MPSF, while the Falcons fell to 3-8-1 and 1-3 in league play.
Akiyama notched his first goal of the season by knocking in a rebound shot right in front of the net after Air Force goalie Brian Guyette made a save on a shot from the right side by Edward Murillo-Jimenez. Guyette, who made seven saves, had no chance on Akiyama's rebound at the 80:07 mark.
The Spartans got on the scoreboard early in the game as Savio Carrijo scored in the ninth minute. Ed Brand started the play with a long pass from center field that Ibarra one-touched from the top of the box to Carrijo on the right side. Carrijo gathered the pass and chipped a shot over Guyette to give SJSU a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons responded late in the first half when sophomore defender Kevin Rosser notched the first goal of his career in the 42nd minute when he blasted a shot from 22 yards that SJSU netminder Lewis Sweeney got a hand on but the ball still found the back of the net. Freshman Kyle Moses and senior Chris Mathews assisted on the play.
SJSU put the game away with 59 seconds when Ibarra took a pass around midfield from Gavin Wenyon that started a four-on-two as the Falcons were pushing up looking for the tying goal. Ibarra never gave up the ball and fired a shot from 17 yards past Guyette for the final margin.
In an evenly played game, Air Force outshot San Jose State, 17-14, but the Spartans held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal. SJSU also had five corner kicks, to none for Air Force.
The Falcons are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 21 when they host Sacramento State at Cadet Soccer Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
