SAN FRANSISCO, Calif. - Sophomore Jacob Schonig (Los Gatos, Calif.) won the still rings event as the Air Force men's gymnastics team competed at the annual All-Academy Championships on Saturday, Feb. 17, in San Francisco, Calif. Scoring a career-best 9.100 on the event, the second-year gymnast bested the field by nearly a half-point, while improving his personal-best total on that event by .700.
As one of just two gymnasts to clear the nine-point plateau in any event, Schonig helped guide the 17th-ranked Falcons to a third-place finish, behind a team score of 184.950. No. 11 Army won its seventh straight title with a team total of 199.400, while No. 14 Navy took second with a score of 196.050.
In addition, five other Falcons collected top-10 finishes on nine different occasions. Junior Tyler Sickles (Burke, Va.) placed third on the high bar with a team-leading 8.550, while also tying for fourth on the parallel bars (8.100). Classmate Brian Boardman (Naperville, Ill.) placed fourth on the floor exercise with a score of 8.350.
Freshman Brennan Wolford (Thornville, Ohio) picked up a third-place finish in the all-around, backed by a career-best 44.750, while also scoring a 7.950 on the vault to tie for ninth. Senior Kurt Antonio (Rio Rancho, N.M.) scored a 43.300 in the all-around to place fourth, behind Wolford.
In addition, sophomore Chris Deans (Sugar Land, Texas) placed sixth on the pommel horse with a team-best 7.750, while classmate Josiah Loeser (Alvin, Texas) tied for seventh on the still rings with a score of 8.250.
