Three Air Force players were honored with the Great Western Lacrosse League's 2007 season awards, as announced by Commissioner Jon Hind today. Sophomore midfielder Griffin Nevitt (Charlotte, N.C.) earned first-team All-GWLL honors, while senior attack Will Meister (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore long-stick midfielder Dan Gnazzo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) were both named to the second team.
Nevitt, a second-team all-conference selection in 2006, led the Falcons with 34 points on the season, recording a team-best 19 goals while adding 15 assists. One of the top scoring midfielders in the country, Nevitt has scored at least one goal or assist in 25 consecutive games and 27 out of 28 for his career. He also ranks among the team's leaders in total ground balls.
Meister, a two-year team captain, earns all-conference honors for the third time in his career. After leading Air Force with 20 assists in 2007, Meister ends his career with 84 assists, ranking tied for sixth place in the Falcons' record books. Air Force's team MVP in 2007, Meister ranks among the nation's leaders in assists per game at 1.67. He has also tallied at least one goal or assist in the last 25 games of his career and has scored at least one point in 48 out of 52 games as a Falcon.
Gnazzo, a two-year starter at the long-stick midfield position, led the Falcons with 42 ground balls on the season, while also tallying his first career assist against Denver. Gnazzo has also seen time as the Falcons' back-up goalkeeper, getting the win over Quinnipiac.
In addition to announcing the all-league first and second teams, the GWLL's individual awards (Newcomer of the Year, Player of the Year and Coach of the Year) were released Thursday as well. Notre Dame, which finished the regular season with a 11-3 overall record and 5-0 mark in the GWLL, swept the individual awards. The conference's Newcomer of the Year award went to the Fighting Irish's Will Yeatman, while Player of the Year honors went goalkeeper Joey Kemp. In addition, Notre Dame's Kevin Corrigan was named 2007 GWLL Coach of the Year after leading the Irish to their 15th NCAA Tournament appearance.
