An appearance at Clune Arena by a former head coach, a game against a possible preseason top 10 team and the always tough Mountain West Conference slate highlight the 2007-08 Air Force men's basketball schedule, released today by head coach Jeff Reynolds.
Air Force, coming off a trip to the postseason NIT semifinals and a 26-9 record last season, will host Jeff Bzdelik and the Colorado Buffaloes on Nov. 29. It will mark the first trip to Clune Arena for the Buffs since the 1979-80 season. Four days earlier, on Nov. 25, the Falcons will face Washington State in Spokane, Wash., as part of the Cougar Hispanic College Basketball Fund Classic. The Cougars finished 26-8 last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The regular season opens on Nov. 9 with the Air Force Classic. The two-day tournament features Dartmouth, AFA's first-round opponent, Northern Colorado and VMI. The Falcons carry a 34-game winning streak against non-conference opponents at Clune Arena into the '07-08 campaign.
Following the season-opening tournament, Air Force hosts Division II Western State on Nov. 14 and Radford on Nov. 19, before traveling to Spokane. The Falcons will face Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 23 and Montana on Nov. 24 prior to playing Washington State.
The CU game precedes a road matchup against Northern Illinois on Dec. 4, followed by three straight home games against Prairie View A&M (Dec. 8), Norfolk State (Dec. 13) and Division II Colorado Christian (Dec. 22). The Falcons wrap up their non-conference schedule with a game at Wake Forest on Dec. 30.
"Our non-conference schedule will prepare us well for conference play," said Reynolds. "Playing Washington State and Wake Forest on the road will be similar to playing at arenas in our league."
Air Force opens the conference slate on Saturday, Jan. 5 against Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Falcons will host 2006 Sweet 16 team UNLV on Saturday, Jan. 12 before hitting the road again to face Wyoming in Laramie on Wednesday, Jan. 16 and New Mexico in Albuquerque on Saturday, Jan. 19.
Defending MWC regular-season champ BYU invades Clune Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 30 and the regular season ends on Saturday, March 8 as the San Diego State Aztecs come to Colorado Springs.
The Falcons are scheduled to be on television 14 times this season, including three national appearances on CSTV (Jan. 22 vs. Colorado State, Feb. 9 vs. Utah and Feb. 12 at UNLV). The other 11 are on The Mtn., Mountain West Sports Network.
The Mountain West Conference tournament, once again in Las Vegas, Nev., runs from March 12-15.
