Air Force Edges Army in a Thrilling Dual Meet

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Backed by a stellar, record-setting performance from senior Greg Stine, the Air Force men's gymnastics team edged out service academy rival Army in dual-meet action on Friday (Feb. 1) in West Point, N.Y. The Falcons tallied a season-best score of 331.350 to defeat the Black Knights (331.300). The victory snaps Army's 15-meet winning streak over Air Force.

Taking the top team score on the floor exercise, still rings, and vault, the Falcons improved its season-high mark by nearly eight points. In addition, Air Force tallied season-best combined marks on the floor exercise (57.150), pommel horse (50.900) and parallel bars (53.850).

Stine was instrumental to the Falcons' narrow victory over the Black Knights, as he won five event titles with Academy record-setting performances.

He scored a record 15.000 to win the floor exercise, while shattering the Academy record on the still rings (15.450). Stine also equaled the program standard of 15.400 to win the vault, while winning the parallel bars with another record performance of 14.750. In addition, he tied for second on the high bar with a score of 13.600 and was the Falcons' top finisher on the pommel horse, accounting for a score of 12.950 to place sixth.

Stine increased his own Academy record in the all-around to win the event with a score of 87.150. That tally is a seven-point advantage over the runner-up in the combined event

The Falcons swept the top three spots of the still rings, as junior Jacob Schonig tallied a mark of 14.600 to finish third and classmate Josiah Loeser matched his personal-best mark at 13.750 to take third.

Air Force also accounted for several top-five finishes on the floor, as freshman Aaron Zaiser scored a career-high 14.450 to finish second. Classmate Daniel Klimkowski and sophomore Brennan Wolford tied for fourth with matching scores of 13.850.

Senior Brian Boardman placed third on the vault with a total of 15.000 - a mark just .050 shy of his personal best, while freshman William Eastman finished fifth on the high bar with a total of 12.950.

Air Force remains on the East Coast for another dual meet on Sunday, Feb. 3. The Falcons will travel to Springfield, Mass., for a showdown with Springfield College at 2 p.m.
