Air Force Duo Claim USAG National Titles

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior Jacob Schonig and senior Greg Stine earned national titles during the individual event finals portion of the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships on Saturday, March 29, in Springfield, Mass. Schonig took first on the still rings, while Stine claimed top honors on the parallel bars with a new Academy record.

Schonig picked up his first career USAG national title, after matching last night's score of 15.550 to easily distance himself from the rest of the rest of the field. With his second straight USAG All-America certificate, Schonig becomes the eighth gymnast in Air Force history to earn a USAG national title and the third on the still rings.

Stine's winning parallel bars score of 14.900 is a new program standard, besting the previous mark of 14.750 that he set in early February.

It is the seventh USAG national title for Stine during his four-year career at the Academy, but his first on the parallel bars. He is only the second Falcon to earn a USAG title on the parallel bars, joining two-time champion and current assistant coach Capt Levi Torkelson (1999, 2000).

Stine also earned three other USAG All-America honors this evening, in addition to his first-place finish in the all-around last night. He finished third on the floor exercise with a mark of 14.650, while notching a 14.500 to take third on the still rings. Stine also earned a sixth-place finish on the high bar after a score of 12.850. For his career, Stine has 15 USAG All-America certificates - more than any other gymnast in Air Force history.

Fellow senior Tyler Sickles rounded out the Falcons' USAG All-America honorees, as he placed fifth on the high bar with a mark of 12.900. It is the second consecutive year that Sickles has claimed USAG All-America honors on the high bar.

Freshman William Eastman narrowly missed USAG All-America honors, as he finished seventh with a score of 13.600. Classmate Kipp Druecke scored a 12.750 to finish eighth on the pommel horse. Junior Josiah Loeser finished seventh on the parallel bars with a tally of 13.200.

Air Force returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 15, when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
