Falcons Place Fifth at MPSF Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. - Senior Greg Stine picked up a third-place finish in the all-around and junior Jacob Schonig placed fourth on the still rings, as the Air Force men's gymnastics team concluded competition at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Saturday, April 5, in Lincoln, Neb. The Falcons tallied a score of 328.500 to finish fifth.
Stine, who led the Falcons on four of the six individual events, finished third in the all-around with a combined score of 86.400. He tallied team-leading marks on the floor exercise (14.900), pommel horse (13.200), vault (15.250) and parallel bars (14.850). In addition, Stine's mark of 15.450 on the still rings was the fifth-best score handed out.
Schonig earned the Falcons' highest still rings score of the night as he garnered a mark of 15.500 to tie for fourth on the event. The fourth-place finish is an improvement of two placements from last year's conference meet.
Senior Tyler Sickles paced the Falcons on the high bar, scoring a 12.900. Sickles also claimed the Falcons' second-best mark on the pommel horse (12.400).
Classmate Brian Boardman posted the team's second highest score on the floor exercise (14.100) and vault (14.850), while freshman Aaron Zaiser earned a 13.550 on the parallel bars. Fellow freshman Nash Mills made his season debut at the conference championships, an outing that was highlighted by a 13.400 on the still rings.
No. 2 Oklahoma won its fourth consecutive title with a score of 359.150 to edge out top-ranked Stanford (357.200). No. 4 California placed third with a score of 356.050, while No. 9 Nebraska (337.750) and No. 15 Air Force rounded out the field.
The Falcons will find out their NCAA fate on April 8, when the championship committee announces its selections for the 2008 national championships, which will be held April 17-20 in Palo Alto, Calif.
