Air Force Travels to USAG National Championships

The Air Force women's gymnastics team concludes the 2008 season this weekend (April 17-19) at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships in Shreveport, La. It is the first time since 2005 that Air Force has sent the full roster to the USAG championship meet. Action begins with a pair of qualifying sessions on Thursday (April 17) at Centenary College's Gold Dome.

SCHEDULING 101
The USAG Championships begin on Thursday, April 17, with a two qualifying sessions. The first will begin at 2:00 p.m., while the second is slated for 5:15 p.m. The top two teams from each session advance to the team finals on Friday (April 18) at 7 p.m., while the top five gymnasts on each event from each session advance to the event finals on Saturday (April 19) at 1:30 p.m.
WHO'S HERE
Air Force will compete in the first session, along with Towson, Cornell and Temple. The second session consists of Texas Woman's University, host Centenary, William and Mary and Seattle-Pacific. The Falcons have already faced Centenary (twice), Texas Woman's University and Seattle Pacific (twice) this season.
DAY EARNS REGIONAL COACHING HONOR
Air Force women's gymnastics coach Doug Day was named the North Central Regional Head Coach of the Year following the NCAA regional championships. It is the first such honor for Day, a three-time national assistant coach of the year, claiming the award twice with the women's team at Minnesota and once with the men's team at New Mexico. In fact, Day was the first-ever NCAA coach to earn the distinction with both a men's and women's team.
REGIONAL RECAP
Freshman Brittany Dutton paced the trio of all-around gymnasts, finishing 17th with a score of 38.225. Sophomore Michelle Denise finished 20th in the all-around competition with a combined mark of 37.475, while junior Abigail Rogers rounded out the group with a 22nd-place total of 36.800.
MISS ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD
Junior Abigail Rogers became the first Air Force gymnast to be named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Year. Rogers, who was awarded this distinction at the conclusion of the conference championship meet, shared the annual award with Michelle Kulovitz of UC-Davis.
ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES
Five members of the Falcons' squad earned all-conference honors based on their regional qualifying averages. Abigail Rogers earned all-MPSF honors for the all-around, balance beam and floor exercise. Michelle Denise claimed a trio of accolades as well, earning hers in the all-around, uneven bars and floor exercise. Brittany Dutton earned a nod in the all-around and balance beam, while Kelly Lewis (vault) and Kayla Kincade (balance beam) rounded out the Falcons' honorees.
