Nick Frawley Places Third at NCAA Regional Meet

LINCOLN, Neb. - Sophomore Nick Frawley qualified for the national championship meet in the pole vault and senior Kevin Hawkins set an Academy record in the 800-meter run, as select members of the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the Midwest Regional Championships in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, May 31.

Frawley finished third in the pole vault to earn an automatic spot in the upcoming national championship meet. Clearing the bar at 17'5" - his best clearance of the season - Frawley was just shy of his personal-best outdoor mark. As one of the top-five finishers from the Midwest Region, Frawley will make his third straight trip to the national meet (2007 outdoor, 2008 indoor).

Hawkins clocked an Academy record time of 1:48.62 to finish sixth in the 800-meter run, besting his own record (1:48.66) that he set last year in the regional preliminary meet. Hawkins is the only member of the men's team to post a program standard this season. As a sixth-place finisher, he is eligible for at-large consideration into the national meet.

The top five finishers from each regional meet automatically qualify to the national meet, while the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-place athletes are available for consideration once the national descending order list has been determined.

Air Force also earned two ninth-place finishes, one spot shy of national thought. Junior Matt Williams placed ninth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:01.34. That time is a personal-best mark and improves his fifth-place standing in the Academy record book. Senior David Lissy earned the same placement in the discus throw after posting a mark of 166'8".

Junior Daniel Castle placed 15th in the 1500-meter run (3:59.25), while classmate Michael Kemp earned a 16th-place finish in the discus throw (155'0"). Sophomore Dan Paladino tossed a 179'2" to finish 18th in the hammer throw.

On the women's side, sophomore Sara Neubauer recorded a distance of 49'9¾" to place 10th in the shot put, while classmate Katie Weber finished 17th in the javelin with a toss of 144'1".
