USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Highlighted by five regular-season meets and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, the Air Force women's gymnastics team unveiled its upcoming schedule on Aug. 21. The Falcons will welcome nine programs from across the country to the Academy's Cadet West Gym throughout the 2009 season, third-year head coach Doug Day announced.
"I'm very excited for the new year to begin," Day said. "We should definitely be a stronger team this year with the addition of our four freshmen. They all bring a wealth of competitive experience, which should make this year's lineups on each event very interesting. My returning upperclassmen have made the commitment to build on last year's success. It should be a fun year!"
Air Force will open the 2009 campaign on Jan. 9, when it hosts a quadrangular meet featuring Wisconsin-La Crosse, Eau Claire and Ursinus. The Falcons will then travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. - the hometown of lone senior Abigail Rogers - for a dual meet with Pitt on Jan. 17. Crossing the country, Air Force will visit conference foe, UC-Davis on Jan. 23, before closing out January at home against another MPSF rival, UC-Davis.
The Falcons open the second month of the season on the road, traveling to Shreveport, La. (Centenary, Feb. 6) and Durham, N.H. (New Hampshire, Feb. 14). Returning to the Academy, Air Force will host Texas Woman's University on Feb. 19 and San Jose State on Feb. 21. The Falcons will then travel to La Crosse, Wis., for their second meet of the year against UW-La Crosse.
Air Force will close out the regular season on Mar. 17, when they host local rival Denver, which finished 12th at the 2008 NCAA Championships.
For the second time in four years, the Falcons will serve as the host institution for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. Joining Air Force at the Academy on Mar. 20 will be UC-Davis, Seattle-Pacific and Alaska-Anchorage.
The NCAA Regionals are slated for April 4 in Iowa City, Iowa, while the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships will be April 8-11 in Denton, Texas. The 2009 NCAA Championships will be held April 16-18 in Lincoln, Neb.
