Air Force Drops 78-64 Contest At UNLV

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force women's basketball team dropped a 78-64 Mountain West Conference contest at UNLV Saturday afternoon at Cox Pavilion. The Falcons dropped to 4-16, 0-7 while the Rebels improved to 9-11, 2-5.
Colorado Springs native and Sierra High School grad., Shamela Hampton, scored 17 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead UNLV. The 17 points gave her 1,001 points for her career. India Chaney scored 12 points and Dominique Harris and Jamie Smith added 10 apiece.
Three Falcons reached double-figures in scoring. Raimee Beck led the way with 19 points and four three-point baskets. Brooke Cultra added 15 points and Kim Kreke had 12.
Air Force took a one-point lead into the half, but UNLV heated up offensively in the second half and pulled away with rebounding and free throw shooting. The Rebels out-rebounded the Falcons 45-29 and made 20 free throws to AFA's nine.
Utilizing an uptempo offense, Air Force took a 29-28 lead into the halftime break. The Falcons pushed the ball upcourt at every opportunity and had its highest scoring first-half in conference play. The 64 points was also a conference game high.
The Falcons led by as many as nine points, at 24-15, in the first half. UNLV stayed in the game however, with a dominant rebounding game, out-rebounding Air Force 27-12 overall and 12-1 on the offensive end in the opening stanza.
Air Force held a 34-33 lead until India Chaney hit a pair of 18-foot fadeaway jumpers to put the UNLV up 37-34. The Rebels then heated up from long distance, hitting several three-point buckets to pull away.
Freshman Jamela Satterfield also played well for Air Force, scoring a career-high five points. Beck, Anna Gault and Stevie Puentes each had four assists for the Falcons.
Air Force returns to action Feb. 4, at BYU. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.MST.
