Falcons Host Wyoming on Senior Day
Air Force plays its final home game of the 2008-09 season on Saturday, Feb. 28 against the Wyoming Cowboys at Clune Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Falcons (9-17, 0-13 MWC) dropped their 13th straight conference game and 14th overall last Saturday, falling 71-66 to Colorado State at home. Wyoming (17-10, 6-7 MWC), defeated CSU, 82-79, Wednesday in Fort Collins, Colo. Air Force's four seniors, Andrew Henke, Matt Holland, Anwar Johnson and Hunter Myers will be honored in a post-game ceremony.
Henke Explodes Against CSU
Senior Andrew Henke scored a career-high 29 points last Saturday against Colorado State at Clune Arena. Henke, whose previous career-high was 23 points earlier this season against Northern Colorado and Texas-Pan American, scored 23 in the first half alone. They were the most points by a Falcon ever in one half against a Mountain West Conference opponent and the most in one half by a Falcon since Lamoni Yazzie scored 26 in the second half of a 66-54 victory over Liberty on Dec. 22, 2001.
Henke was 8-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 from three-point land against the Rams. His 29 points were the most by a Falcon since Tim Anderson scored 30 at Wake Forest last season.
Up Next
The Falcons travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to battle the UNLV Runnin' Rebels on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. (PT). The game will be nationally televised on CBS College Sports.
Three-Point Streak
Air Force has made a three-point shot in 506 consecutive games. The last time the Falcons failed to make a three-pointer was Dec. 4, 1991 in a 57-51 victory over Adams State College. The streak is the third-longest in the MWC behind UNLV (733) and New Mexico (608).
Four Seniors Play Final Home Game
Four Falcons will play their final regular season game at Clune Arena on Saturday against Wyoming. Andrew Henke, Matt Holland, Anwar Johnson and Hunter Myers will be honored by their teammates and coaches following the game.
Henke is No. 3 on AFA's career list for three-point percentage (41.7%) and No. 7 for games played (114) and three-pointers made (158). He currently leads the team in scoring at 12.1 points per game and scored a career-high 29 points last Saturday against Colorado State.
Holland has appeared in 74 career games and is currently No. 2 in the MWC in three-point percentage at 42.9%. He is also fourth on AFA's career list for three-point pct. at 41.2 percent. He scored a career-high 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting from three-point range at CSU on Jan. 20.
Johnson has played in 97 career games and started all 57 the last two seasons. He is second on the team in scoring at 12 points per game and leads the team with 64 assists. He scored a career-high 25 points, including 13-of-17 from the line, against Stony Brook on Dec. 31.
Myers has not played in a game since his freshman season, but has been a vital asset to the program the last four years. He appeared in seven games as a freshman.
Homecoming on Saturday
Saturday's game marks the homecoming event for the 2008-09 season. Approximately 25 former players, coaches, and officer representatives who represent the over 300 individuals who have been an integral part of Falcon basketball since its inception in 1956 will be honored at halftime.
Starting Lineup Shakeup
Air Force head coach Jeff Reynolds changed his starting lineup for the BYU game on Feb. 3. Three freshmen, Brandon Provost, Taylor Stewart and Sammy Schafer, each started the first game of his career against the Cougars. Reynolds changed the lineup again against Utah, starting freshman Shawn Hempsey in place of Provost. The new starting lineup against BYU was the third different starting lineup for the Falcons this season, marking the first time since the 2001-02 campaign that Air Force has had more than two different starting lineups in a single season.
Struggling at Clune This Season
Air Force has lost eight consecutive home games, tying the school record. In fact, the Falcons have lost more games at Clune Arena this season (9) than the previous five seasons combined (6). Still, since the beginning of the 2003-04 season, Air Force has won 75 of its 90 home games, including 35 of its 47 Mountain West Conference games.
Henke Moving Up Career Charts
Senior Andrew Henke recently moved into the Top 10 on two career lists at Air Force. He is currently No. 7 on the school's all-time list for three-pointers made with 158 and games played with 114.
Falcons Haven't Seen 0-13 in Conference Recently
Air Force fell to 0-13 in MWC play on Saturday against Colorado State. It is the first time since the 1993-94 campaign that Air Force lost its first 13 conference games. Overall, AFA's 14-game losing streak is the longest since the final 13 games of the 1995-96 season and the first three of the `96-97 campaign. The Falcons have never lost 14 consecutive conference games.
Henke and Holland Top 5 in Career 3-Point Pct.
Seniors Andrew Henke and Matt Holland are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, on Air Force's career list for three-point percentage. Henke is shooting 41.7 percent, while Holland is shooting 41.2 percent. Holland is 60-of-140 (42.9%) this season, which is No. 2 in the Mountain West Conference, while Henke is No. 4 at 42.0% (58-138).
Freshmen Playing Career-High Minutes
Freshmen Brandon Provost and Shawn Hempsey each played a career-high number of minutes on Feb. 3 against BYU. Provost, who started the first game of his career, played 27 minutes, while Hempsey, who started his first career game at Utah on Saturday, had career-highs of four points and three rebounds in 23 minutes vs. BYU. Jon Atkins played a career-high 21 minutes on Jan. 10 at UNM while Sammy Schafer, who also started the first game of his career vs. BYU, played a career-high 26 minutes at San Diego St. and vs. UNM.
Falcons Shooting Better, But So Are Opponents
For just the second time this season, Air Force shot 50 percent or better from the field in consecutive games. The Falcons shot 52.4 percent against New Mexico on Feb. 11, then hit 50 percent on Feb. 14 at Utah. Unfortunately for Air Force, the Lobos (55%) and Utes (62.5%) each shot a then season-best against AFA. They were the first two league games Air Force hit the 50 percent mark this season and only three times has another MWC opponent hit the mark (New Mexico, 54.3%; Colorado State, twice).
Falcons Finally Lose When Shooting Well From 3
On Jan. 17 against TCU, Air Force lost for the first time this season when shooting better than 33.3 percent from three-point range. The Falcons shot 38.5 percent (5-13) from behind the arc against the Horned Frogs. Air Force has surpassed the mark four times since then, including a season-high 58.8 percent Saturday against CSU but ended up losing and is 9-5 when eclipsing 33.3%. Conversely, Air Force is 0-12 when it shoots 33.3 percent or less from long range.
Parker Puts Up Career-High at Utah
Junior Grant Parker is making the most of his playing time this season. After playing in just 14 games his first two seasons at Air Force, he has appeared in all 24 this season and has started four of them, including the first of his career on Jan. 17 against TCU.
Parker, who scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting (4-of-5 from 3-point range) at Utah on Feb. 14, is averaging 5.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest in `08-09. Parker grabbed a career-best nine rebounds against CSU Bakersfield and Northern Illinois.
