USAFA, Colo. - Air Force senior defenseman Greg Flynn has been selected for the fourth annual NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge to be held on April 10 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. The East vs. West competition will highlight the "Friday Night at the Frozen Four", which also includes the presentation of the Hobey Baker and Hockey Humanitarian Awards and the announcement of the American Hockey Coaches Association All-American teams.
Flynn, from Lino Lakes, Minn., has been among the nation's top scoring defenseman for the majority of the season. He is currently tied for the national lead with 1.00 points per game (5-29-34 in 34 games). He ranks sixth in the nation among all players with 0.85 assists per game. Flynn is the top scoring defenseman in the Atlantic Hockey Association and also ranks third in assists per game among all players.
The competition will be conducted in an East vs. West format with each team having six male position players, six female position players, two male goaltenders and two female goaltenders. An alternate list has been established in the event that players have to withdraw from the competition due to other commitments, such as their team is participating in the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four.
Requirements for selection to the team consist of all players having exhausted their collegiate eligibility and a nomination by their head coach. The players were selected by representatives from the American Hockey Coaches Association, the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee and the NCAA national office staff. The competitions will include puck control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot, rapid fire shooting, accuracy shooting and penalty shot.
Air Force has had a participant in each of the last two skills competitions as Andrew Ramsey competed in 2007 in St. Louis and Eric Ehn was selected in 2008. Ehn was named the West Team's Top Performer at the Skills Competition at the Frozen Four in Denver last season. Air Force is the only team in the nation to have a men's competitor each of the last three years.
Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased by visiting the Verizon Center box office, calling Ticketmaster at 202/397-SEAT, or by logging on to www.ticketmaster.com. The Frozen Four Skills Challenge begins at 8 p.m. ET and will be preceded by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award at 7 p.m. and the Hockey Humanitarian Award at 6:30 p.m.
