USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - For the second straight week, newcomers showcased their skills in the ring, as the Air Force boxing team hosted another round of Friday Night Fights on Oct. 15 at the Academy's Boxing Room. The 10-bout match also featured the return of several returning boxers making their season debuts. Freshman Denis Vorobyov was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
Vorobyov improved to 2-0 on the season after claiming a victory by decision over Johnny Buckingham in a 180-pound bout. Using slick movements and a powerful left hook, Vorobyov defeated his senior opponent.
Freshman Zac Spranger had a strong collegiate debut, as he opened the night with a referee-stopped victory over junior Zach Schumann at 205 pounds. Using good combination punching, Spranger forced the referee to call the bout in the second round.
Spranger was one of four bouts to be stopped early by the referee. Andrew Pineda claimed a first-round victory over Justin Zach in a 120-pound bout, while Cooper Ziekinski earned his first-round win over Brandon Peters at 180 pounds. Using constant pressure, junior Rainer Caparas earned a victory in the third round of a 127-pound bout, as he wore down freshman Ryan Finkelstein-Diaz.
Junior Dan Starr returned to the ring after having off-season elbow surgery to claim a win by decision over Glenn Miltenberg at 150 pounds. It was a close match, as the two stood toe-to-toe and traded blows for much of the bout.
Josh Mills defeated William O'Connor at 195 pounds, while Frederick Johnson decisioned Anthony Vahling at 215 pounds. Brandon Cameron picked up a victory by decision in his 161-pound bout with James Livingstone and Adonis Reiler closed out the night with a 156-pound decision over Kyle Galdney.
After three straight weeks at home, the Falcons head out onto road for the next three. Air Force will compete against UNLV and Nevada in Las Vegas on Saturday, Oct. 23, before heading to Detroit, Mich., for the annual Service Academy Classic on Friday, Oct. 29. The Falcons close out the road trip at West Point on Friday, Nov. 5.
