New Season on the Horizon Air Force opens the 2010-11 season with an exhibition game on Monday, Oct. 4 vs. the University of Lethbridge (Alberta, Canada) at Cadet Ice Arena Faceoff is at 6:05 p.m. MT and there is no admission charge No radio or television The Falcons open the regular season at the Kendall Classic in Anchorage, Alaska, Oct. 8-9 The Falcons face Alaska-Fairbanks, a team that earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season and went 18-12-9 overall, on Friday, Oct. 8 Air Force will face the host school, Alaska-Anchorage, on Saturday, Oct. 9 The AHA season kicks off with a road game at AHA newcomer Robert Morris, Oct. 17 The first regular-season home game is Friday, Oct. 22, vs. AIC
A Look Back Air Force clinched its fourth straight winning season in 2009-10, a school record against all-Division I opponents. AFA was 16-15-6 overall last season AFA had a season best 10-game unbeaten streak in November-December Forward Jacques Lamoureux and defenseman Tim Kirby earned first-team all-AHA honors Senior goalie Andrew Volkening was a second-team selection Lamoureux tied for third in the nation with 14 power-play goals and tied for 13th with 22 goals In the AHA Tournament, AFA was the third seed and swept Army in the quarterfinals at Cadet Ice Arena. The Falcons' season ended with a 2-1 loss to Sacred Heart in the semifinals of the AHA Final Four in Rochester.
Who's Back The top three scorers and 13 of the top 15 return this season. The Falcons return 83 percent of the points, 81 percent of the goals and 85 percent of the assist from last season Senior Jacques Lamoureux led the team with 22 goals and 42 points Senior Derrick Burnett led the team with 23 assists and was second with 10 goals and 33 points Junior Tim Kirby was the top scoring defensesman on the team, and third in the AHA, with 19 assists and 24 points.
Between the Pipes The graduation of goaltender Andrew Volkening will be a difficult void to fill Volkening holds nearly every goaltending record at the Academy, was a two-time all-AHA selection and a two-time NCAA Regional all-tournament selection Junior Stephen Caple, sophomore David Bosner and freshman Jason Torf will all compete for the position Caple played in three games last season for a total of 63 minutes. Bosner played in two games for a total of 17 minutes. Neither has ever started a collegiate game
Two All-AHA Players Return Senior Jacques Lamoureux and junior Tim Kirby were named to the all-AHA first team last season Lamoureux was one of two unanimous choices on the first team. He tied for first in the AHA with 18 goals in 28 league games. He was also first with 11 power-play goals, tied for third with 35 points and tied for 11th with 17 assists in AHA games. The team's top scoring defenseman, Kirby was third in the league with 23 points in 28 league games. He scored five goals on the season and three of them were game-winners in the final three minutes of a game or overtime (RIT, UConn and Holy Cross).
