BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The Air Force water polo team will open the 2010 season ranked 19th in the nation, as determined by the Men's Varsity Top 20 preseason poll, released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).
Cal, which ranked third in the final poll of 2009, garnered 95 points to take first place in the 2010 preseason poll, edging out UCLA by a single point. Two other teams, Stanford (91 points) and defending national champion USC (90 points) also received first place votes in the poll.
Air Force, which finished the 2009 season with an 18-14 overall record and final national ranking of 17, received 17 points in the balloting. Four other teams from the Western Water Polo Association join the Falcons in the preseason top 20. Loyola Marymount, the two-time defending WWPA champion, is ranked sixth, followed by UC San Diego (11th), Santa Clara (13th) and UC Davis (17th).
The Falcons, led by senior captain Bobby Geiger (Buellton, Calif.) open the 2010 campaign Sept. 4-5 at the annual Triton Invitational, hosted by WWPA rival UC San Diego. During the tournament, the Falcons will face the host Tritons, conference foes La Verne and Loyola Marymount, and 10th-ranked Pacific.
