NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior Alicia Leipprandt (Ubly, Mich.) scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Air Force women's basketball team to a 68-59 season-opening victory over Lipscomb Friday evening in Allen Arena. The win broke a 43-game road losing streak for the Falcons, which dated back to the 2007-08 season.
Also scoring in double-figures for Air Force were sophomores Cherae Medina (Denver, Colo.) and Camille Thompson (McDonough, Ga.) with 10 points each. Medina, whose previous career high was two points, also added a career-best seven rebounds. Meanwhile, junior Katie Hilbig (Castle Rock, Colo.) added nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
While Lipscomb held a 14-10 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half, Air Force went on a 17-3 run over the next five minutes to take control and went into the intermission with a 35-28 advantage.
The Falcons opened the second half with another run, outscoring the Lady Bisons 12-2 to grab a 17-point advantage, their largest of the game. However, Lipscomb began to slowly chip away at their deficit, eventually getting within six points at the 3:25 mark with back-to-back three-pointers. Leipprandt responded with a basket to push the Falcons' lead back to eight, as Air Force held on for the win.
Air Force outrebounded Lipscomb, 44-41, and forced 23 turnovers, while recording 11 steals. The Falcons also outshot the Lady Bisons from the field and the free throw line, shooting 36.5 percent and 70 percent, respectively.
The Falcons are back in action on Sunday, when they head to UT Martin for a 2:00 p.m. (CT) contest.
