Air Force junior Michael Lyons has been named Mountain West Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week for games through November 13. This is the first career weekly accolade for Lyons, who shares the award with San Diego State junior guard Chase Tapley.
A 6-6 guard, Lyons helped lead Air Force to the championship of the inaugural All-Military Classic with wins over Army and VMI last weekend. The junior from Newport News, Va., was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, averaging 22.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. In Friday's 87-71 opening-round victory against the Black Knights, Lyons just missed out on a double-double with 24 points and a career-high nine rebounds while adding three assists and one steal. He followed that with 20 points, seven boards and one assist in Saturday's 75-65 championship victory vs. the Keydets.
For the week, Lyons shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line. He is the first Falcon to score at least 20 points in each of the first two games of a season since Jarmica Reese did it to open the 1997-98 campaign.
In addition, Lyons was named the conference's Player of the Week by the website College Sports Madness.
The Falcons host Western State College this Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
