Falcons Defeat Jackson State in Air Force Classic Opener

USAFA, Colo. - Junior Katie Hilbig (Castle Rock, Colo.) registered the first double-double of her career to lead the Air Force women's basketball team to a 64-51 victory over Jackson State Friday evening in the first game of the Air Force Classic.

Hilbig registered 16 points and a career-best 11 rebounds as the Falcons captured their first home win of the season to move to 4-4 on the year. Meanwhile, Alicia Leipprandt (Jr., Ubly, Mich.) and Dymond James (Jr., Brambleton, Va.) added 16 and 12 points, respectively, for Air Force.

Both teams struggled offensively to start the game, with neither team making a field goal until nearly five minutes into the contest. Air Force and Jackson State (0-2) traded baskets early in the contest with five ties and six lead changes, but the Falcons began to pull away, leading by as many as 10 before taking a 32-25 advantage at the half.

While Jackson State got as close as three points with 10 minutes remaining in the second period, Air Force went on a 7-0 run to push its advantage back to double-digits and remained in control for the rest of the contest.

Although the Falcons had problems taking care of the ball, committing a season-high 29 turnovers, they outrebounded the Lady Tigers 47-35 for the game. Air Force also shot 87.5 percent from the foul line, connecting on 28-of-32 free throws.

Rachel Jones was the leading scorer for Jackson State with eight points, knocking down 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.

The Falcons will face the University of South Florida in the final game of the Air Force Classic, slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
