SYRACUSE, N.Y. -
Playing in a neutral site contest to open the 2011 season, the Air Force lacrosse team fell to Siena, 11-6, Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
After a scoreless opening period, Siena (1-1) made a run in the second quarter, tallying four unanswered goals. The Falcons got on the board with 2:09 left in the first half as senior captain Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.) found the back of the net with a man-up goal.
Siena was first to score after the break, increasing its lead to 5-1, but the Falcons made a run of their own, registering four straight scores. Freshmen Kyle Cassady (Columbus, Ohio), Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.) each tallied their first career goals, while Sandtorv notched his second man-up score of the game as the Falcons tied the game with three and a half minutes remaining in the third period. However, Siena scored once more in the quarter to take a 6-5 lead with one period remaining.
With the momentum on their side, the Saints tallied three goals in less than a minute to move ahead 9-5 with 10:14 left in regulation. Siena scored two more goals in the period before Air Force closed out the scoring with a goal from senior Zack Carroll (Freehold Township, N.J.).
The Falcons outshot the Saints for the game, 38-33, and committed two fewer turnovers. In addition, Air Force was 2-of-4 on man-up opportunities, while holding Siena scoreless (0-of-3) on the EMO. However, Air Force won just six of 21 face-offs in the game.
