USAFA, Colo. - Air Force freshman goaltender Jason Torf was named the Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie of the Week as he helped lead the Falcons to a sweep of Robert Morris, Feb. 25-26, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Torf started both games and earned two wins as the Falcons clinched a bye in the first round of the playoffs. In the two wins, he had a 2.00 GAA and a .927 saves percentage. On Friday, the Hermosa Beach, Calif., native made 31 saves in the 4-2 win. AFA was out-shot, 5-0, in the first five minutes, but Torf kept the Colonials off the board until the second period. On Saturday, he stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced, including all 10 in the second period when Air Force was trailing 1-0. His 13 wins this season are the second most by a freshman goaltender in the nation and just one behind Denver's Sam Brittain. Torf has made 25 consecutive starts.
Air Force, 16-11-6 overall and 14-7-6 in the AHA, closed out the regular season in second place in the AHA. The Falcons are idle until March 11-13 when AFA hosts an Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal best-of-three series. Air Force's opponent will be determined on March 5 and could be either Army, Bentley or Sacred Heart.
Torf has been named the AHA Rookie of the Week three times this season, more than any other freshman in the league. He has also earned AHA Goalie of the Week honors (Jan. 3) and AHA Rookie of the Month (December) honors this season. It is the eighth time Air Force has won an AHA weekly honor this season.
