Falcons Have Strong Showing at Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. - Highlighted by a third-place finish from the 4x400-meter relay team, the Air Force track and field team recorded multiple top-25 finishes during the first full day of collegiate competition at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday, April 15, in Walnut, Calif. Several career-best marks were recorded at Hilmer Lodge Stadium, including the third-best women's discus throw and 10th-fastest women's 800-meter time.
The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Cory Engel, sophomore Anthony Delgado, junior Manny Smith and senior Chris Severino clocked a season-best time of 3:12.28 to place third in the relay. In addition, Smith and Severino claimed top-25 times in the 400-meter dash, behind respective season-best times of 47.73 (13th) and 48.36 (23rd), while Engel placed 25th in the 110-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 14.95.
Air Force earned a top-10 finish from sophomore Zach Wood, who cleared a career-best bar of 6'8¾" to place 10th.
Junior James Cole finished 12th in the discus throw (164'5"), while classmates Kyle Schwochow and Robert Drye finished 15th (season-best 53'3½") and 21st (51'1½"), respectively, in the shot put. Senior Conner Van Fossen threw a season-best distance of 211'5" to finish 17th in the "elite" javelin throw.
Senior Justin Tyner rounded out the men's top-25 finishers with a 24th-place time of 13:58.90 in the "elite" division of the 5000-meter run.
On the women's side, junior Paige Blackburn improved her third-place standing in the program's all-time discus throw records, as she threw a 165'0" to place fourth in the discus throw. Blackburn also finished 13th in the shot put behind a season-best distance of 46'2¾".
Junior Kimber Shealy improved her season-best height in the pole vault by one foot to 12'6¾" to finish third in one section of the pole vault, while classmate Tawny Lambuth and senior Melissa Beerse placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in another section with matching clearances of 11'9¾".
Although she did not finish within the top 25 of the 800-meter run, freshman Annette Eichenberger clocked a time of 2:14.31 to debut in 10th on the program's all-time list.
Action is on-going at the annual Mt. SAC Relays. Three members of the Falcons' distance team will compete compete later this evening in Walnut, Calif., while the rest of the team travels to Cerritos, Calif., tomorrow (April 16) for the Beach Invitational. In addition, part of the squad will head to Pueblo, Colo., for the CSU-Pueblo Invitational.
