Air Force scored four second-half goals and Kelly Stambaugh posted her third shutout of the season as the Falcon women's soccer team blanked Nebraska Omaha 4-0 Friday night at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, the Falcons evened their record at 5-5-2 while the Mavericks fell to 3-5-2.
After a scoreless first half which saw just four total shots on goal, the Falcons got on the scoreboard in the 51st minute when junior Eryn Avjian fired a shot past UNO goalkeeper Katelyn Tschida from 12 yards out. Freshman McKenna Fox started the play with a centering pass to junior Stephanie Patterson, who one-touched the ball to Avjian past the Maverick defense.
Patterson notched her second assist of the game in the 63rd minute when her shot rattled the near post and rolled across the goal-line, right to senior Bridgett Murphy, who put the Falcons up 2-0 with her third tally of the season.
Fox then scored her fifth goal of the campaign in the 72nd minute, knocking the ball past Tschida after a corner kick that senior Cassie Wilson headed off the crossbar. Fox found the ball in the middle of a goal-mouth scrum and placed it in the back of the net.
Freshman Felicia Sturgeon completed the scoring with a spectacular goal, the first of her career, in the final minute. Sturgeon gathered the ball just outside the box, spun a couple of times past UNO defenders and placed a 15-yard shot past Tschida into the lower right corner.
"Once we scored the first goal, our confidence increased throughout the rest of the game," said Air Force head coach Larry Friend. "I am proud of the way our bench played. Hopefully our confidence will carry over to our game on Sunday."
Air Force dominated every facet of the game, outshooting the Mavericks 16-4 overall and 9-2 in shots on goal. Stambaugh saved both of UNO's shots on goal, while Tschida had five saves for the Mavericks.
The Falcons return to action on Sunday, Oct. 2 when they host Northern Arizona at 11 a.m.
