Each week during the 2014 season, GoAirForceFalcons.com will feature a member of the Air Force women's gymnastics team. This week, the spotlight is on freshman Hannah Wilken, one of four Minnesota gymnasts on the Falcons' roster. A native of Eagen, Wilken has competed on the vault and uneven bars during three competitions this season.
ON GYMNASTICS...
How did you get started in gymnastics?
Enrolled in toddler classes at age 3.
Who are your biggest fans?
My parents and everyone at my club gym, TAGS.
What challenge do you find in gymnastics that you don't find in any other sport?
Gymnastics is a big mental game.
What do you like best about gymnastics?
It is both a team and individual sport.
What is your favorite event and why?
Bars because it is fast and exciting
Do you have any pre-meet rituals?
I have lucky clips.
What is your advice for young gymnasts?
Work harder than anyone else.
What drew you to the Air Force women's gymnastics team?
The awesome coaching staff and closeness of the women's team.
What are you most excited about for the upcoming season?
Competing collegiate gymnastics for the first time!
Describe your personality in two words:
Hard working
ON THE ACADEMY...
Who are the biggest influences in your life and why?
My parents because they encourage me to always do the right thing and my old teammate Kylie Schermann because she had the best attitude at practice.
How do you balance your athletics, academics and military duties?
I plan my time.
Who is your favorite non-gymnast athlete(s) at the Academy?
My roommate because she can run marathons!
What is your favorite class?
French
Who is your favorite professor/AOC/etc.?
My English professor because she makes a boring class really funny.
What is your favorite place on the Academy grounds?
The gym
What were your first thoughts of the Academy?
Freshmen look like tiny ants running the strips.
What is your favorite thing about USAFA?
The friendships I've already made here.
What has been the hardest thing about the Academy?
Getting tear gassed in basic.
What was your most memorable "welcome to college" moment?
The basic wake-up we all got the first morning.
