Falcons fall at Robert Morris, 5-1

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Dalton Izyk made 39 saves to lead Robert Morris to a 5-1 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game, Friday, Oct. 16, at the 84 Lumber Arena in Moon Township, Pa.
Robert Morris (1-0, 1-0 AHC) opened the scoring at the 11:30 mark of the first period on the rush. Brandon Denham put back a rebound to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead. The Colonials took a 2-0 lead at 8:45 of the second period. Center Greg Gibson took a long outlet pass in a four-on-four situation. Gibson skated in uncontested on Falcon freshman goaltender Billy Christopoulos and went high with a backhander for a 2-0 lead.
Air Force (1-2, 0-1 AHC) had several chances early in the third, but could not light the lamp. Once the Colonials gained control, RMU scored two goals in a span of 24 seconds. David Friedman scored on a 2-on-1 rush and then Zac Lynch skated around the Air Force defense and down the right wing, going top shelf for a 4-0 lead with 12:37 left in the third. After the goal, freshman Shane Starrett replaced Christopoulos in goal. Air Force got on the board after winning a draw in the offensive zone Ben Carey won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Kyle Mackey slid the puck to the center point. Johnny Hrabovsky scored his second of the season with a slap shot at 7:41. Later in the period, in a four-on-four situation, Air Force pulled the goaltender for an extra attacker, but RMU scored an empty-netter with 2:30 left to make up the final margin.
Air Force outshot RMU, 40-36, in the game. The Falcons were 0-for-3 on the power play while the Colonials were 0-for-2. Christopoulos made 26 saves in 47 minutes for the Falcons. Starrett made five saves in 11 minutes of action.
"Our attention to detail needs to be better," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They are a big, strong and veteran team. When we had breakdowns tonight, we had major breakdowns. That's how it goes sometimes when you have a young team. When we made mistakes, they took advantage. When they made mistakes, we didn't. I like our spirit. We are a scrappy group."
Air Force and Robert Morris conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7:05 pm ET.
