High Point holds off Air Force, 10-9, in lacrosse
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - High Point scored the first two goals of the game and then held off Air Force for a 10-9 win in a college lacrosse game in High Point, N.C. Air Force fell to 4-5 overall this season while High Point improved to 4-5.
Tyler Cook and Tyler Vogrig scored in the first quarter to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Hruby and Cook traded goals and then Hruby scored early in the second to cut the Panther lead to 3-2. A man-up goal by Connor Robinson and an even-strength tally from Nick Basile put High Point up 5-2 at the half.
In the third quarter, goals by Keith Dreyer, Hruby and Marcus Ward brought the Falcons to within one at 6-5 with 4:05 left in the third. Robinson then scored two goals to put the Panthers up by three. Falcon Austin Smith scored with 12 seconds left in the third to make the score 8-6. Robinson's fourth of the game came early in the fourth quarter and then Hruby and HPU's Dan Lomas traded goals as the Panthers took a 10-7 lead with 8:44 left in the fourth. Air Force battled back as Barrett Anigan scored at 7:01 and Christopher Allen scored at 4:44 to make the score 10-9. However, the Falcons could not get another goal as the Panthers held on for the victory.
Nick Hruby led the Falcons with four goals and five points. High Point outshot Air Force, 36-28, in the game. High Point won 15 faceoffs while Air Force won eight. The Panthers won 32 ground balls while the Falcons had 18. Junior Doug Gouchoe made 13 saves for the Falcons.
Air Force returns home to host Jacksonville, Saturday, March 28, at 2 p.m. MT at Falcon Stadium..
