
Freshmen Kick Off Action at California Decathlon

AZUSA, Calif. - Two freshmen members of the Air Force track and field team opened competition at the Mt. SAC/California Invitational Multi-Events Meet today (April 15) at Azusa Pacific University. Calvin Berstler and Tyler Berson made their collegiate debut in the decathlon and kicked off a busy week of action for the Falcons.
After the first five events of the two-day meet, Berstler is in 14th with 3147 points, while Berson is 15th and just 17 points back (3130).
Berstler picked up a top-10 finish in the meet's opening event, as he placed ninth in the 100-meter dash with a debut time of 11.57. He also finished 11th in the high jump (career-best 5'11¼"), 12th in the long jump (20'3¾"), 14th in the 400-meter dash (debut 53.23) and 18th in the shot put (debut 32'1½").
Winning his section of the 400-meter dash and finishing third overall with a career-best time of 50.74, Berson recorded the pair's top event finish. The freshman placed 14th in the high jump (career-best 5'8¾") and 16th in the 100-meter run (debut 11.80), before rounding out his first day with 17th-place marks in the long jump (career-best 19'4¼") and shot put (debut 34'0¾").
The pair returns to Cougar Stadium tomorrow morning for the final five decathlon events, while the rest of the squad kicks off competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays.
