USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Highlighted by two additions to the program's all-time standings, 10 first-place finishes and two additional `top collegiate' placements, the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the Air Force Collegiate Open this evening (Jan. 8) at the Academy's Cadet Field House.
Sophomore Jamiel Trimble picked up a top-10 time during a winning endeavor in the 60-meter hurdles, while classmate John Reynolds collected a top-three all-time mark to win the triple jump.
Trimble registered the ninth-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in Academy history, as he won that event with a time of 8.01. Trimble, who became the first runner since 2008 to impact the program's top-10 list for the indoor hurdles, also claimed an event title in the 200-meter dash, as he clocked a time of 21.32 to win the 45-runner event by 0.40 seconds.
Reynolds became just the fourth Falcon in Academy history to break the 50-foot mark in the triple jump, as he registered a distance of 50'5¼" to win the event title. Reynolds improved his personal distance by more than a foot, while moving into third on the program's all-time list.
In addition to the victories by Trimble and Reynolds, Air Force claimed seven first-place finishes, including sweeps of the high jump and 3000-meter run. Junior Taylor Smith cleared 6'10¾" to win the men's high jump, while sophomore Shelley Spires cleared 5'8½" during a jump off to finish first in the women's event. Senior Daniel Shellhouse lapped the field to win the men's 3000-meter run (9:12.92), while junior Samantha Skold earned a wire-to-wire victory in the women's race (10:56.97).
Classmate Matt Dorsey won the 800-meter run and paced Air Force to four of the top-five finishes, while senior Sean Bapty and freshman Sedacy Walden took first in the mile and 400-meter run, respectively, to lead Air Force to two top-four finishes in both events.
Dorsey clocked a time of 1:54.25 to take first in the 800-meter run, while senior Grant Caswell and freshman Nic Cheuvront finished second (1:57.30) and third (1:59.94), respectively. Fellow freshman John Quinn rounded out the Falcons' top-five performances with a fifth-place time of 2:01.00. Bapty used a time of 4:31.84 to win the mile and pace Air Force to a one-two finish in that event (sophomore Conner Wilburn, 4:38.84), while Walden and sophomore Chip White finished first (50.47) and third (50.72), respectively, in the 400-meter dash.
Air Force also earned the top collegiate finishes in the men's and women's pole vault, as senior Dylan Bell (17'6½") and freshman Kathryn Tomczak (12'5½") finished second overall in their respective events.
Trimble's victory in the 200-meter dash paced the Falcons to three top-five finishes in that event, as junior Zach Johnson and sophomore Robbie Anderson finished second (21.72) and fifth (22.03), respectively.
The Falcons added eight additional top-five finishes on the night, including multiple top-four performances in the men's shot put and women's triple jump. Senior Grant Hamilton recorded a throw of 56'2" to place second in the shot put, while junior Darby Maier finished fourth following a toss of 53'10¾". Senior Angelea Ross and freshman Andrea Abel took third (38'8¾") and fourth (36'5"), respectively, in the triple jump.
Johnson added a third-place time of 6.87 in the 60-meter dash, while classmate Naomi Alston clocked a 400-meter time of 59.16 to finish fifth overall and third amongst collegiate runners. A pair of sophomores rounded out the Falcons' top-five finishers, as Brooks Hardy took third in the weight throw (56'8¼") and classmate Calvin Berstler finished fifth in the long jump (21'7¼").
The Falcons head out on the road next week (Jan. 14-15), when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Holiday Inn Invitational.
