U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Sophomore forward John Sims logged a career high two goals to boost Air Force to a 3-0 win over conference foe CSU Bakersfield, Sun., Oct. 16, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons improve to 10-4, 4-1 WAC on the season, while CSUB falls to 4-10, 2-4 WAC.
On a clear and windy day at Cadet Soccer Stadium, Air Force wasted no time putting pressure on the Roadrunner goalkeeper as the Falcons controlled the possessions for the majority of the first period.
Sims, a Colorado Springs native, opened up the Falcons' scoring slate in the 28th minute by returning the ball into the goal following Tucker Bone's shot which deflected off the top pipe directly into Sims right leg. Bone logged his fourth assist of the season.
In the 36th minute Sims proved to be the hot man on the field as he launched another ball into the lower left side of the goal from 15 yards out off of Austin Guerrero's corner kick from the far side. Sims' goal marked his fourth of the season and a career high performance. Guerrero tallied his second assist on the season.
Air Force entered the locker room at the half leading, 2-0; taking 10 shots to the 'Runners' two. Junior goalkeeper John Wendt was not tested with a shot on goal in the first period.
The Falcons quickly got back to work with another goal early in the second period. Falcon goals leader Austin Dewing beat the CSUB defender down to put himself in a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper in which he finished into the left side of the net for his seventh of the season. Dewing currently leads the team in goals, assists and points.
With a comfortable lead the Falcons bench would get their chance to see action as head coach Doug Hill began cycling players into the match. 24 Falcons made their way onto the pitch during the match.
With fresh legs in, the Falcons were able to maintain their stubborn defense against the Roadrunners' attempts. CSUB was unable to find a scoring rhythm by the end of regulation.
The Falcons outshot the 'Runners, 19-3, at the final whistle. In 80 minutes in the box, Wendt was not challenged with a single shot on goal. The Falcons' defense earned the credit of holding CSUB to three shots on the match with none on goal. Dewing was credited with his fourth game winner of the season.
"The objective today was to respond well and we did," explained Hill. "The resiliency of our guys shows that we are where we need to be as we move forward."
"We established an excellent rhythm of play and we got it done for 90 minutes," Hill continued. "Every guy that we got in worked hard made a positive difference and we're looking forward to continuing this style of play and getting better each week."
