USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's basketball dropped a 76-61 contest to Weber State Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena. The freshmen duo of Mariah Forde and Kailin Davis combined for 32 points to lead the Falcons.
After rallying back from an early deficit to make it a one-point game after the first quarter, the Falcons had a sluggish second quarter that allowed the Wildcats to pull away. Weber State (3-0) out-scored Air Force (0-3) 26-7 in the second quarter to lead 49-29 at the half.
"I thought Weber State played an extremely good first half," Air Force head coach Chris Gobrecht said. "That was too big a hole for us to climb out of."
Three players reached double-figures in scoring for Weber State, led by guard Emily Drake, who scored 16 points, which included her going 4-for-4 from three-point range. As a team, Weber State shot 56.3 percent from three-point range, making 9-of-16 attempts.
For the Falcons, Davis came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points, adding three steals. Davis was 7-of-9 from the field, hitting a pair of three's. Her classmate, Forde, scored 14 points and added three rebounds and two assists. Junior Dee Bennett was the third Falcon to reach double-figures in scoring, chipping in with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Air Force's five freshmen combined for 40 of the team's 61 points.
"I thought today, that when we were at our best, we had three freshman and a junior that's hardly played until this season, out on the floor for us," head coach Chris Gobrecht said. "Weber State is a very good team. That team played in the WBI finals last year. They can be an inspiration for our team in that just four years ago, they didn't win any games. Their strong play now is something we want to become like sooner than later."
Air Force trailed 23-22 after the first quarter. Weber State hit six of their first seven shots to lead 16-6 early on. The Falcons scrapped their way back into the game to trail by just one. Air Force saw itself down by a big margin at halftime, but out-scored the Wildcats 32-27 in the second-half, including 13-7 in the fourth quarter.
Air Force returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Army West Point. Tip-off is 7 pm ET.
