Falcons Head to New York for Two Meets

The Air Force women's gymnastics team travels to New York this weekend for two competitions. The Falcons will face SUNY Cortland in a dual meet on Friday, Feb. 12, before competing against Brockport State, Cornell and Ithaca College at the Big Red Goes Pink Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 14.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: SUNY CORTLAND
SUNY Cortland is currently ranked 73rd in the national standings and sixth in Division III with an average of 186.010. The Red Dragons are coming off of a third-place finish at Cornell's triangular on Feb. 6. SUNY Cortland, which was led in the meet by Rachel Filipski's fourth-place finish on the vault (9.525), faced the Falcons once last February, dropping a 191.500-187.525 decision at the Academy.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: BIG RED GOES PINK INVITATIONAL
Cornell, the host of the Big Red Goes Pink Invitational, is currently ranked 54th in the national standings with a 192.238 average. Finishing second at their home triangular on Feb. 6, Cornell was led by Kaitlin Green, who won the uneven bars (9.750) and took home runner-up honors on the balance beam (9.825). Brockport State, ranked 69th overall and second in Division III with a 187.142 average, swept the event titles during its 189.400-175.575 victory over Rhode Island College on Feb. 7. Ranked 76th overall and ninth in DIII with an average of 183.969, Ithaca College defeated Springfield 183.425-182.025 in its last meet on Feb. 6, with Megan Harrington winning the uneven bars (9.450) and tying for first on the floor exercise with teammate Carolyn Nichols (9.625).
LOOKING AROUND THE CONFERENCE
Highlighted by a #7 ranking from Sarah Neumann, the Falcons have three gymnasts ranked among the top 20 of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Neumann is currently tied for seventh on the balance beam with a season-average of 9.695, while Kara Witgen and Julia Sebben are ranked 16th (9.515) and 18th (9.450), respectively, on the uneven bars.
ONE NIGHT ONLY
This weekend's opponents – SUNY Cortland, Cornell, Brockport State and Ithaca College – are four of just six regular-season opponents that Air Force will face just once. The Falcons, who also competed against Pittsburgh and Wisconsin-Oshkosh just once, will face their other seven regular-season opponents a total of 16 times.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE FALCONS
Air Force travels to Ames, Iowa, on Friday, Feb. 19, for a triangular meet with Iowa State and Minnesota. It will be the second meeting of the season between the Falcons and the No. 35 Cyclones, as well as the first of three meets with the 18th-ranked Gophers.
