Falcons Wrap Up Action at Adams State Qualifier

 ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Air Force track and field team collected five first-place finishes during competition at the Adams State Qualifier in Alamosa, Colo., on Saturday, Feb. 13. In all, the Falcons accounted for 35 top-five finishes at the ASU High Altitude Training Center.
The men claimed first-place finishes in three individual events, while sophomore Gabe Brown and freshmen Preston Roche, Nic Cheuvront and Henry Okoro combined for a winning time of 3:26.00 in the 4x400-meter relay.
The Falcons earned event titles from sophomore Tyler Koss (400-meter dash), freshman John Quinn (800-meter run) and junior Reed McGuire (weight throw), while the trio paced Air Force to three of the top-four finishes in those events.
With a Meet Record 400-meter time of 48.92, Koss led classmate Chip White (career-high 49.10) and freshman Sedacy Walden (49.13) to a 1-2-3 sweep of the standings, as all three times easily bettered the previous meet record of 49.31. Air Force also claimed the top-three spots in the weight throw, as McGuire (54'9½"), junior Malachi Sparling (54'3¼") and senior Ari Uzo-Okereke (50'9¼") recorded career-best throws to finish first, second and third, respectively. Quinn clocked a time of 1:58.12 to win the 800-meter run, while fellow freshman Preston Roche finished second in 1:58.16 and classmate Gordon Kowalkowski took fourth in 1:59.24.
Koss also earned a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash (22.39), while junior Garrett Newman finished fourth in a career-best time of 22.50.
The Falcons also earned multiple top-five finishes in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and pole vault. The freshmen trio of Joe Ernst (15'1"), Walker Newell (14'1¼") and Tom Ernst (career-best 14'1¼") finished second through fourth in the pole vault, while Newell added a third-place time of 8.66 in the 60-meter hurdles. White, the runner-up at 400 meters, finished fourth in the hurdles with a time of 8.77, while freshman Sam Hinegardner and sophomore Tyler Berson finished fourth (5'10¾") and fifth (5'7"), respectively, in the high jump.
Sophomore Conner Wilburn clocked a time of 4:29.30 to finish third in the mile, while sophomore Jake LaCoste and freshman Tyler Cibotti finished fifth in the long jump (21'3¼") and triple jump (42'8 ¼"), respectively.
Junior Stephanie Robb picked up an event title for the women's team, as she finished first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.42. Robb paced the Falcons to three of the top-five finishes in that event, as freshman Tami Cardenas and junior Alexa Chacon finished fourth (2:27.04) and fifth (2:27.77), respectively.
In addition to her top-five finish in the 800-meter run, Chacon also finished within the top five in the 60-meter hurdles and high jump. Chacon, who clocked a season-best time 8.93 during hurdles qualifying, finished fourth in the finals after crossing the finish line in a time of 9.12. She also matched her season-high during a fifth-place clearance of 5'1" in the high jump.
Freshman Aryn Maxwell also finished within the top five of multiple events, finishing third in the 60-meter dash (8.12) and fourth at the 400-meter distance (1:01.08). Classmate Kaliyah Gorman clocked a time of 26.23 to finish second in the 200-meter dash, while senior Anna Olesinski placed third in the mile with a time of 5:29.50.
From the field, junior Zoe Casteel and freshman Jerni Self finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the pole vault with matching marks of 11'5¾", while freshman Andrea Abel recorded a distance of 36'7" to finish fourth in the triple jump.
The Falcons return to action next Friday (Feb. 19), when they to Laramie, Wyo., for the annual Rocky Mountain Classic. That meet will serve as the final tune-up before the 2016 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will take place on Feb. 25-27, in Albuquerque.
