ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Air Force senior Sarah Neumann was honored with the Mari-Soper Spirit Award at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships pre-meet banquet on Thursday, April 7, in St. Charles, Missouri.
Neumann is the second Academy gymnast to earn the Mari-Rae Soper Spirit Award, as Lindsay Ebel received the honor in 2014. The annual USAG spirit award is named after the UCSB head coach who was onboard American Airlines Flight 77 when it crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11. The award recognizes a gymnast for their passion, dedication and dedication to the sport of gymnastics.
The Falcons' co-captain, who missed her freshman and junior seasons while recovering from two ACL surgeries, has had a successful senior season in her return to the lineup this year. Neumann, a second-team all-conference selection on the balance beam, is tied for the team lead on her signature event after posting a career-best 9.850 at Alaska. The winner of three balance beam titles this season, Neumann also reached the 9.8 mark during her victory at the Texas Woman's Quadrangular.
In addition, Neumann, classmate Joey Ching, junior Kara Witgen and freshman Kelly Luers received Scholar-Athlete recognition from USA Gymnastics.
