Former Falcon Otis Jones promoted to rank of Colonel

Former Air Force men’s basketball standout Otis Jones was promoted to the rank of Colonel June 29. Jones is a 1995 Air Force Academy graduate and four-year letterman at the Academy.
Jones’ promotion ceremony was presided over by General Darren McDew, commander of the U.S. Transportation Command. Jones will take over the director of the J47 Mobility Unit at NORAD-NORTHCOM.
Jones’ 20-plus year career has been in combat flying, as an executive officer to the vice commander of Air Mobility Command, a squadron commander in charge of over 160 military and civilian personnel, detachment commander in charge of 50+ officer and enlisted airman from multiple career fields, flight commander in charge of 10-20 officers, evaluator/instructor/aircraft commander of two major weapon systems (C-17 and C-130), assistant director of operations for a 180+ squadron, executive officer for the largest C-130 operations group in the Air Force, Branch Chief for Air Mobility Capabilities Based Planning Division and executive officer to the Director of Operational Planning, Policy and Strategy, Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, Plans and Requirements. He most recently served at the Air War College, headquarters Air Mobility Command.
Jones finished his career as the second-ranked scorer in school history with over 2,000 points. He is the only player in school history to earn first-team all-conference honors three years and was a finalist for the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as a senior in 1995. Legendary ESPN sports announcer Dick Vital awarded Jones his version of the Naismith Award as the best player in the country under six-feet.
