BOULDER, Colo. – Highlighted by three first-place finishes, the Air Force track and field team wrapped up action at the Potts Indoor Invitational this afternoon (Jan. 14) in Boulder. Senior Zach Johnson picked up event titles in the 60-meter and 200-meter events, while classmate Darby Maier won the shot put.
Johnson, who claimed a pair of event titles during December's season-opening meet, picked up right he left off in his return to the track this afternoon. The senior recorded the fastest time in the preliminary round (6.81) of the 60-meter dash, before clocking a mark of 6.74 in the finals. Finishing just 0.01 seconds off of his own Academy record, Johnson bettered the field by a 0.19-second margin. He returned to the track less than an hour later to easily win the 200-meter dash, as he posted a season-debut of 21.33 to win the race by 0.16 seconds.
Maier claimed his second shot title in as many meets, as he tossed a 56'2" to win the 21-thrower event.
In addition to the event titles from Johnson and Maier, Air Force earned several additional top-eight finishes in that event. Sophomore Sedacy Walden and junior Robbie Anderson finished fifth (career-best 22.17) and sixth (22.25), respectively, in their season debuts of the 200-meter dash, while freshman Trent Holmes clocked a career-best time of 7.00 to place fifth in the 60-meter dash. Sophomore Garrett Coalson finished sixth in the shot put with a career-best time of 52'0¾", while junior Jackson Spalding placed eighth with a throw of 50'8¼".
Backed by a runner-up finish from junior Tyler Koss, Air Force claimed four of the top-five spots in the 400-meter dash. Koss ran a season-opening time of 47.93 to take second in the 20-runner event, while Walden finished third in a career-best 48.19, freshman Brandon Sanders ran 48.22 to take fifth in his debut at that distance and junior Chip White clocked a personal-best time of 48.22 to finish fifth.
In the distance events, junior Anthony Bucci ran 8:46.20 to finish sixth in the 3000-meter run.
On the women's side, Ashleigh Lehotsky paced the Falcons with a third-place finish in the shot put (debut of 40'3½"). Sophomore Kaliyah Gorman collected top-seven finishes in the 200-meter (sixth, 26.31) and 400-meter (seventh, 58.73) events, while freshman Lucy Zimmerman registered a distance of 36'4¼" to finish sixth in the triple jump.
The Falcons return to action next week, when they host the 27th-annual Air Force Invitational at the Academy's Cadet Field House. The three-day meet begins on Thursday, Jan. 19, with the women's pentathlon and the opening events of the men's heptathlon.
