UUSAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's basketball dropped a 69-59 contest to Boise State (16-7, 6-6) in a Mountain West contest Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena. Freshman Kailin Davis scored 15 points each to lead the Falcons in their Play4Kay/National Girls and Women in Sports/Pink game.
Air Force played strong for three quarters, but Boise State's big third quarter was the difference. The Falcons trailed 30-28 at halftime, but the Broncos took control of the game with a 15-4 run to close the third quarter and take a 53-41 lead.
Air Force led 18-17 after the first quarter and kept the game close till midway through the third. The Falcons never trailed my more than four points until midway through the fourth. Air Force out-scored Boise State in two quarters, winning the fourth by a score of 18-16.
The Falcons had three players in double-figures scoring. Along with her 15 points, Davis added three rebounds and three assists. Junior Erika Chapman scored 14 points in 27 minutes off the bench. Chapman was 6 of 8 from the free throw line. Freshman Mariah Forde scored 14 as well. Forde added six rebounds and two assists. Junior Cortney Porter scored eight points and set a career-high with 12 rebounds.
Marta Hermida and Marij Vanderschaaf led Boise State with 13 points each. Brooke Pahukoa added 10 points and seven steals.
Despite being out-sized again, the Falcon controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Broncos 43-36. Air Force also had 16 offensive boards for its best total in a conference game. The Falcons also held Boise State to just one made three-point basket.
"I thought we played Boise State well for 35 minutes," Air Force head coach Chris Gobrecht said. "We just didn't have the depth to keep the fight up for 40 minutes today. We had good games from Venessanna Itugbu and Cortney Porter, as did Mariah Forde and Erika Chapman. We're taking some big strides offensively and we now just have to figure out how to play hard on both ends of the floor for the entire game."
Air Force returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Nevada. Tip-off, at Lawlor Events Center, is 6:30 pm PT.
