WOODLAND, Calif. – Five members of the Air Force women's gymnastics team earned all-conference honors this afternoon (March 16), as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced its 2017 all-MPSF team. Senior Kara Witgen, junior Casey Bell, sophomore Riley Hill and classmate Mariana Murphy claimed first-team distinction, while Witgen and freshman Anna Salamone earned second-team honors.
The top gymnast from each school in each event, as determined by their Regional Qualifying Score on March 13, was an automatic selection to the all-MPSF list. Six additional gymnasts per event were chosen as at-large selections, based on the next highest RQ scores and regardless of team. The top-six gymnasts per event were named First Ream, while the remaining six were named to the second team.
Witgen captured a pair of first-team accolades, as well as one second team honor, to bring her career total of all-MPSF awards to seven. The senior was the Falcons' top gymnast on the balance beam (9.785) and all-around (38.700), while ranking third and fourth, respectively, in the conference. Witgen also earned second-team honors on the vault, as she ranked eighth with a team-leading mark of 9.745.
The remaining four gymnasts all captured the first all-MPSF awards of their careers. Hill joined Witgen on the balance beam's first-team with a RQS of 9.775 (fifth), while Murphy was the team's second first-team honoree in the all-around (38.100, sixth). Bell earned first-team distinction on the floor exercise, as her Regional Qualifying Score of 9.820 was ranked fifth in the league, and Salamone captured second-team recognition on the uneven bars, behind a team-leading mark of 9.730 (10th in conference).
The Falcons will meet their conference counterparts this weekend, when they travel to San Jose, Calif., for the 2017 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Saturday, March 18.
