EVERETT, Wash. -- Force senior Tim Wang successfully defended his all-around title and led the ninth-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team to its eighth-straight team title at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships, which were held this evening (March 24) in Everett, Washington.
Air Force, which has captured every USAG title since 2010, scored a 396.950 to claim the 2017 crown.
Backed by three first-place scores, Wang won his second all-around title in as many years with a combined total of 82.900. The senior earned first-place marks on the pommel horse (14.200), still rings (13.800) and vault (14.700), while adding second-place scores on the parallel bars (13.900) and high bar (13.300). He is just the second Falcon to win multiple USAG titles in the all-around.
Fellow senior Chase Cannon also earned a first-place finish during tonight's team finals, as he scored a 13.900 to pace Air Force to a 1-2-3-4 finish on the high bar. In addition to the finishes from Cannon and Wang on that event, sophomore Lukas Texeira finished third (13.200) and classmate Christian Kalustian placed fourth (13.150).
The Falcons also claimed a one-two finish on the still rings, as junior Fletcher Braunton scored a 13.700 to finish second behind Wang. Junior Jonathon Fornoff and sophomore Jake Stanley both finished within the top-five on the parallel bars, as Fornoff finished fourth (13.650) and Stanley tied for fifth (13.500), and classmate Eric Klein added a fourth-place score of 13.450 to lead the Falcons on the floor exercise.
Kalustian's third-place finish on the high bar was one of three top-10 finishes for the sophomore, who also tied for sixth on the vault (14.150) and ninth on the floor exercise (13.600). Cannon added a second top-10 mark on the pommel horse (eighth, 12.550), while sophomore Jonah Urlaub tied for that same placement on the still rings (13.050).
Air Force returns to Everett Community College tomorrow (March 25) for the individual event finals, which will see the top eight finishers from each event (combined Divisions, with no more than two gymnasts per program) compete for individual USAG titles. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
