
Starrett named semifinalist for Richter Award

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force sophomore Shane Starrett has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the 2017 Mike Richter Award, as announced today by Let's Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation. The award annually honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey. The five finalists for the fourth annual award will be announced on Thursday, March 23, with the winner presented on Friday, April 7 at the 2017 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Chicago.
Starrett ranks fifth in the nation in winning percentage at .767. In all games, he ranks ninth in the nation in goals-against average (2.08) and 11th in saves percentage (.922). His three shutouts this season are tied for the 12th most in the nation. The native of Bellingham, Mass., has made 30 or more saves six times this season, including a career-high 46 in the tie (shootout win) with Ohio State in the Ice Breaker Tournament, Oct. 8. He was named the MVP of the Ice Breaker, has been named the Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week three times this season and was the AHC Goalie of the Month for February.
Candidates for the Mike Richter Award were determined by nominations from all 60 NCAA Division I men's hockey head coaches. The semifinalists, finalists and winner are selected by a committee of coaches, scouts and members of the media.
Starrett is joined on the list of semifinalists by: Michael Bitzer, Bemidji State; Parker Gahagen, Army; Kyle Hayton, St. Lawrence; Tanner Jaillet, Denver; Merrick Madsen, Harvard; Hunter Miska, Minnesota Duluth; Jake Oettinger, Boston University; Cal Petersen, Notre Dame; and Charles Williams, Canisius.
To be eligible for the Mike Richter award, candidates must display outstanding skills on the ice, be in good academic standing at an NCAA college or university, display good sportsmanship, comply with all NCAA rules; be full-time students at an NCAA college or university; and complete 50 percent or more of the season. Consideration is also given to the candidate's activities in the community.
