COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Air Force sophomore Sedacy Walden was honored by the Mountain West this afternoon (April 11), claiming the first MW Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week award of his career. Walden's award marked the third time in four weeks that a member of the men's team has claimed the conference's weekly track award.
Running the Academy's fastest 400-meter dash since 2000 (46.49), Walden won the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational and debuted in third on the program's all-time standings. That time, which leads the Mountain West and is ranked 24th in the NCAA, paced Air Force to three of the top-four finishes in that event. The native of Phoenix, Ariz., ran the opening leg of the 4x400-meter relay that crossed the finish line in 3:09.25 – the second-fastest time in Academy history and the fifth-fastest time in Mountain West history – during a runner-up performance, while leading off the 4x100-meter relay that finished third behind a conference-leading time of 40.78.
Walden helped the Falcons to the team title at the Rafter/JJK Invitational, where they defeated one nationally-ranked program (#12 UCLA) and squads from Utah State, Oklahoma, Cornell and UC Riverside.
The Falcons return to action this weekend, as they split for three meets – the California Invitational (April 12-13), the Mt. SAC Relays (April 13-14) and the Beach Invitational (April 14-15).
