AUSTIN, Texas – The Air Force track and field team set one Academy record and captured five more bids into next month's NCAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday, May 27, as the squad wrapped up action at the West Preliminary in Austin, Texas. Junior Jamiel Trimble paced the Falcons' lineup at Mike A. Myers Stadium this evening, as he advanced to the national meet in four different events. During the four-hour span allotted for running events, Trimble qualified to the final site of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in four events – running two individual races and anchoring a pair of relays.
Air Force opened the night in the 4x100-meter relay, as Trimble anchored a quartet that included freshman Terrell Bradford, senior Zach Johnson and junior Robbie Anderson to an Academy-record time of 39.53 and a bid to the program's second-straight NCAA Championship meet. The foursome, who finished fourth in their heat and 11th overall to nab an at-large bid as the second-fastest time qualifier, took 0.12 seconds off of the program standard that Johnson, Anderson and Trimble set during last year's preliminary meet and became the first Air Force relay to ever earn multiple bids to the national meet.
In a span of less than 40 minutes, Trimble punched his return ticket to Historic Hayward Field in two individual events. Clocking a wind-aided time of 13.74 to finish fifth in his heat and eighth overall, the junior claimed an at-large spot in the 110-meter hurdles, posting the second-fastest time of the at-large qualifying pool. He earned an automatic bid in the 200-meter dash, as he posted his fastest wind-aided time of the season (20.30) to take second in his heat and earn one of the heat's three ‘AQ' slots.
Trimble closed out his impressive night as the final leg of a 4x400-meter relay squad that captured the first NCAA bid in program history. The quartet, which included sophomore Sedacy Walden, junior Chip White and classmate Tyler Koss, accounted for the second-fastest time in Academy history (3:05.98) and finished third in their heat to earn an automatic bid to the final site. Their time of 3:05.98 was just 0.06 shy of the program standard they set during the conference meet two weeks ago.
In between the 4x400-meter relay and the 110-meter hurdles, senior Matt Dorsey became the first Air Force runner to advance to the final site of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in back-to-back years, as he earned his second-straight at-large bid in the 1500-meter run. With a time of 3:49.03, Dorsey finished seventh in his heat – and seventh in the full 24-runner quarterfinal – to capture the final qualifying spot.
In the Austin finals of the 5000-meter run, senior Lindy Long clocked a time of 17:16.87 to finish 16th in her heat of the women's race (28th overall), while sophomore Jacob Bilvado posted a time of 14:56.34 to finish 18th in his heat of the men's event (34th overall). Competing in the Falcons' only field event of the day, junior John Reynolds registered a clearance of 6'10¾" to finish 27th in the high jump.
Sophomore Micah Fontaine also competed in the quarterfinal round of the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.40 to finish eighth in his heat and 24th in the overall field.
The Falcons qualified a program-record 10 athletes in eight events to the final site of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will take place in Eugene, Ore., on June 7-10.
