The 15th-ranked Air Force men's soccer team blanked SJSU, 4-0, for its second-straight four goal shutout win
The Falcons and Spartans took the field appearing to be evenly matched. San Jose State controlled some of the early possessions but Air Force started to heat up after a goal was called back on an offside call in the 10th minute.
In the 39th minute, Austin Dewing ignited the Falcons offense, stealing the ball in a high-pressure defensive play and charging straight to the Spartan's cage where he shook a defender and sent the ball low and wide left past the keeper.
Early in the second half Dewing continued his onslaught on the Spartans' defense as Danny Han sent a perfect long ball down field where Dewing put his speed on display, beating all defenders and getting the keeper to come off his line. With a small opening, Dewing made a quick one touch shot across the frame to the right side for his second goal of the evening. Dewing's two goals on the evening increased his season total to 10.
"This was one of my favorite goals this season," said head coach Doug Hill. "Danny Han laid a perfect ball out for Austin Dewing to chase down as he sprinted past the defenders- just brilliant play by our veteran leaders. I think those types of goals are going to continue to come the speed and power that we have."
With the offense firing on all cylinders, the Falcons opened up and never looked back. In the 53rd minute, just 90-seconds after Dewing's second goal, he was back in the Spartans' box firing shots. The Spartan's goalkeeper blocked the initial attempt into Aaron Uribe's possession who then took a shot that deflected off another Spartan defender. Uribe quickly capitalized off his own deflected shot, notching his fifth goal of the season as the ball went to the right side of the frame.
In the 68th minute, a corner kick from Luis Martinez was headed into a defender by David Louthan where his cousin, James Sims, collected the deflection and fired a rocket into the right side of the net for his second goal of the season.
With the score at four-nil, coach Hill cycled in his entire bench for the third time this season. The young Falcons proved their mettle as they held the Spartans scoreless for the remainder of the match.
Air Force's junior goalkeeper, Andrea Seazzu, recorded his seventh shutout and 13th win in the frame. The suffocating Falcon defense allowed the Spartans zero shots on goal. Air Force dominated the scoresheet, tripling the Spartan's total shot count, 18-6, and taking 15 shots on goal. Dewing led the charge with four shots.
"I couldn't be happier with that 4-0 win against a quality team," said coach Hill. "They were an active group and we got one called back early but we have a mentally and physically strong team that wasn't shaken- they stuck to the game plan and picked up the pace and the goals came."
"Having this senior group makes us a great team this year, not only because of their ability to win but their ability to open up games and get the younger guys some quality experience. That quality time is going to pay dividends through the rest of the season. I look forward to enjoying the win for tonight, but tomorrow we get back to work and prepare for a good Seattle U team."
Air Force wraps up its home stretch on Saturday, Oct. 20, against Seattle U, who is receiving votes in the most recent coaches' poll. The Falcons and Redhawks are slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
