Air Force Heads North For First Double Road Match Weekend
The Air Force Academy women's soccer team gets back on the road for a pair of Mountain West matches up north, beginning with Colorado State, Friday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m., followed by a game at Wyoming, Sunday, Oct. 7, at 12:30 p.m. Despite being past the halfway point in the season, this weekend will mark the first time the Falcons are playing two road matches in the same weekend. Both matches will have live stats, while the Wyoming match will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
Last Time Out
In the second weekend of Mountain West play, the Falcons battled to a 0-1-1 weekend against the schools in Nevada. Air Force dropped a tough match to the University of Nevada, 1-0, despite out-shooting the Wolf Pack 17-3. They followed that up with a 0-0 draw against UNLV, who came into the weekend with the top offense in the conference.
At Least It's Not A Loss...
With Air Force tying five matches this season, they set a new program record for draws in a season, with the previous season-high being four back in 2006. On the season, Air Force is one of two programs with five ties, along with Army West Point. The two schools tied each other earlier this season, 0-0, on Sept. 7.
Racking Up The Minutes
As a result of all the double overtime games Air Force has played this season, it comes as no surprise they are among the leaders in the nation in average minutes per game. With five double OT matches in 10 games, Air Force has played an average of 100 minutes per game, which is good for third in the country, just behind Drexel (100.25) and St. Bonaventure (102).
Hiddink The Brick Wall
For the 2018 season, senior goalie Jennifer Hiddink continues to be one of the top keepers in both the conference and country. She is currently leading the Mountain West in saves (63), saves per game (6.30), and save percentage (.851). Her saves per game are 19th in the NCAA, while her save percentage is 35th and her total saves are 36th. In addition, Hiddink is 13th among active goalies in career saves, as well as 10th in career saves per game among active netminders.
Tough October Stretch
With the Calender turning over into October, the final month of the regular season will also be Air Force's toughest stretch of the year, as five of their remaining seven matches will be on the road. Prior to this weekend, the Falcons had played just two true road matches, at Army on Sept. 7, and at San Jose State, Sept. 23.
Moving Up The Record Book
Senior Jennifer Hiddink has had an outstanding Air Force career, and because of that she finds herself near the top of the Falcon record book in numerous categories. The veteran netminder is third in Air Force history in career saves with 308. She is two saves behind Kelly Stambaugh for second place all-time, and 57 away from breaking the program record of 364 set by Steph Jardine. In addition, the Wylie, Texas native is second in goals against average (1.26), third in shutouts (12), while also ranking fourth in wins (16), and GK minutes (4775).
Opponent Connections
Despite sharing the same state, the lone high school connection between the Falcons and Colorado State Rams comes via Texas, as Air Force freshman Micah Larkin and CSU freshman Ariell Hopkins were classmates and teammates at Rockwall High School in Rockwall, Texas. The Rams also have four girls on their roster who are from Colorado Springs. The Cowgirls and Falcons have a pair of players who were high school teammates, as AF freshman Keelyn Osoba and UW freshman Jamie Tatum were classmates at Rock Canyon High School in Highlands Ranch, while AF senior Bre Robertson and UW freshman Adalyn Vergara both attended Windsor High School. In all, Wyoming has 14 girls from Colorado on its roster.
20th Season in the Mountain West
2018 marks Air Force's 20th season as a member of the Mountain West Conference after being one of its charter members back in 1999. In 19 seasons, Air Force holds a 57-132-18 mark in conference matches.
