Falcons Drop Another Tight Decision, 1-0
10/5/2018 6:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer
It was the third one-goal loss in conference for Air Force this season
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team had another tight match, but came up short in a 1-0 defeat to Colorado State University Friday evening, Oct. 5, at CSU Soccer Field.
The Falcons (1-5-5, 0-3-2 MW) had a strong beginning of the first half, but faded down the stretch, while a 65th minute goal from the Rams (5-5-3, 2-2-1 MW) was the difference maker in Air Force's third one-goal defeat in five conference matches.
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Hiddink made four saves on the afternoon to up her career total to 312, moving her into second place on the all-time saves list at the Academy. She is now 53 saves away from breaking the all-time program record.
On the offensive side of the ball, Air Force totaled seven shots in the match, with none coming on net. They did, however, register more corner kicks than CSU, 4-3.
Air Force came out firing, notching four shots and a pair of corner kicks over the first 20 minutes of play. The Ram defense clamped down after that, however, and AF was held without a shot over the final 25 minutes of play.
The first half was a scrappy affair, as the teams combined for 16 fouls, and CSU was booked for two yellow cards. Colorado State tallied the only shot on goal of the first half, one of their two shots, but the game went into the half scoreless.
The second half was a different story, as the Colorado State offense dominated the possession. The Rams out-shot the Falcons, 9-3, including four on net. The difference in the match came in the 65th minute when, following a Hiddink save, the ball skipped away, and a CSU player was there for the tap in goal. Following the goal, Air Force had a couple shots, but neither found their way on net, as the Rams held on for the 1-0 win.
Air Force returns to the pitch, Sunday, Oct. 7, when they take on the Cowgirls of the University of Wyoming. Kickoff from Laramie is set for 12:30 p.m.
