Both goals were scored in the final five minutes of play
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team was five minutes from securing a win, but a late goal from the University of Wyoming sent the match to overtime, which ended in a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon, Oct. 7, at Madrid Sports Complex. It is the sixth draw of the season for Air Force (1-5-6, 0-3-3 MW) which ties a Mountain West Conference record.
Senior Kaitlyn Cook was almost the hero, as her 86th minute tally gave the Falcons what looked like the game winner, but the Cowgirls (8-3-3, 3-2-1 MW) got the equalizer less than a minute later to send the match to OT. The goal was Cook's second of the season and the seventh of her career.
Overall on the day, Air Force registered 10 shots, five of which were on net. Cook was the biggest threat offensively, as she had seven of the shots, three of which were on target. On the defensive side, senior Jennifer Hiddink faced 16 total shots, making four saves.
The first half was spent almost evenly on both sides of the field, as the Cowgirls only out-shot the Falcons by a 7-5 margin. Air Force actually registered two shots on net, compared to Wyoming's one, but none of the opportunities were particularly threatening as the match remained scoreless after the first 45 minutes.
The second half did not have much offensive momentum on either side, until the final five minutes. In the 86th minute, the Wyoming goalie tried to play a ball in the box, but it was stolen away by Cook, and she dribbled the ball in for the easy goal, giving Air Force a lead with just under five minutes to play.
Unfortunately, the Cowgirls were up to the challenge, as out of the restart of play, they quickly earned a corner. Out of the corner, the ball was played perfectly into the box, and it was headed in for the equalizer. With little time remaining, the match went into OT with the 1-1 score.
In overtime, the match looked more like the majority of regulation than the final five minutes of regulation, as both sides got a couple looks on net, but none of them found pay dirt, as the match ended in the 1-1 draw.
Air Force returns home next weekend, Oct. 12, for the penultimate home match when they host conference leading Boise State University. Kickoff against the Broncos is set for 6 p.m.
